By most people’s standards, MARY PORTAS, one of the UK’s most high-profile businesswomen, has had a pretty stellar career. From transforming Harvey Nichols and creating her Mary’s Living and Giving Shops for Save the Children, to presenting TV series including “Mary, Queen of Shops” and “Mary Portas: Secret Shopper", she’s reached the top of the career ladder. But at what cost?
At the cost, Mary says, of playing the business game for years where the rules were set by men, for men. At the cost of putting in long hours, being competitive, and suppressing her natural energy, sensitivity and instinct. And she changed, and rebuilt her business on values she believes matter more: collaboration, empathy, instinct and trust. And it worked!
We are thrilled to welcome Mary to Stroud Book Festival. In conversation with the Festival’s Artistic Director, Caroline Sanderson, she will share what she’s learned from her experiences throughout her career – and is still learning – about changing the way we work, insights she also sets down in her new book, “Work Like a Woman: A Manifesto for Change”. This is an event for both men and women who would like to make the world of work a better one, whatever job they do.
